He was meant to be looking into strange happenings that he worries might be 'too late' to solve if left to fester. The lab itself is causing strange happenings. They are poisoning the town. Mumbo's hair is turning grey. The merch drops seemed to imply that the Grumbot AI originated in this town, was made by Big Ron and passed down to Mumbo, who went on to improve it throughout his time on hermitcraft. The company mentions their work in AI in relation to their work in the field of immortality. Mumbo remains working there despite seeming to know what they're doing to this town that he seems to care about deeply. They are researching immortality. His hair is turning grey. Do you. Do you see what I'm seeing.
